Whickham Gold Club Tees Off With Sponsorship

Whickham Golf Club is getting ready to host its popular pro-am tournament on Friday 24 May thanks to local business sponsorship.

Gateshead-based Hadrian Healthcare Group, which owns The Manor House care home in Whickham, is sponsoring the tournament for the second year running and has also sponsored the first tee sign, leader board, tee fencing and scorecards.

Ken Greatbatch, chair of marketing and new membership for the club said: “We are delighted that Hadrian Healthcare Group has been able to sponsor the tournament and course improvements this year.

“The tournament is a great day out.  Each team of three partners with a north of England pro player, and the pros also compete against each other.”

Founded in 1911, the club has over 500 members. And the scenic course regularly attracts birdies of a different kind - red kites can be spotted flying over from the National Trust’s neighbouring Gibside estate and surrounding countryside.

Ian Watson, owner and chairman of Hadrian Healthcare Group said: “Whickham is my local club. I’ve lived in Whickham all my life and had family membership over many years.

“As a company we’re keen to be active in the community, and have sponsored projects such as the Whickham Community Garden and café too.

“All our residents at The Manor House in Whickham are social members at the club and can enjoy the bar and café, games room and beautiful outlook here.

“Most provincial golf clubs have suffered financial pressures in recent years. It’s great to be offering support at a time when the club, under new management, is going from strength to strength. In my view it’s one of most attractive clubs and courses in the north east.”

The club is also bringing on the next generation of golfers.

“Our junior liaison officer Michael Farrey is working with local schools, and we have had European tour champion Ken Ferrie here to talk to our junior golfers,” said Ken Greatbatch.

“We’ve got some really good junior players. We’ve also got plans for new and exciting practice facilities.

“Whickham is a friendly club and it’s a challenging course for all levels.”

Fees are very competitive, for example under 21s can join for £4 per month. Additional categories such as ‘Pay and Play’ membership for 21 to 29 year olds have just been introduced. There is a twilight offer for visitors after 4pm. Everything is geared to offering better value for money and the club is holding its prices until the end of March 2015.
