Heaton Catering Equipment Congratulates Oliver Smith, NACC Care Cook of the Year

Newcastle-based Heaton Catering Equipment has presented Oliver Smith, head chef at Hadrian Healthcare Group’s Wetherby Manor care development, with a set of Sabatier knives in recognition of his recent National Association of Care Catering (NACC) award win.

Oliver won the prestigious NACC Care Cook of the Year title in June in a dramatic cook-off against finalists from across the country.

The competition is one of the longest-standing independent recipe competitions in the UK, successfully raising the profile of the care catering sector as an exciting career choice and championing those working within it. Open to all chefs and cooks in the care sector entrants are required to create a delicious and nutritionally balanced two-course menu, main and dessert, suitable for service users in a care setting.

Steven Henry, business development manager for Heaton Catering Equipment said: “It was a delight to meet Oliver and talk to him about his passion for food and creativity. There are a number of awards in our industry to recognise chefs and let them showcase their talents. The NACC award is a great achievement for Oliver and Hadrian Healthcare Group.”

Oliver said: “A great set of knives is a key part of a chef’s ‘toolkit’ and I’d like to thank Heaton Catering Equipment for this very generous gift. It was fantastic to win the NACC title and I’m looking forward to helping to raise the profile of care catering over the next year.”

Oliver is the third Hadrian Healthcare Group chef to win the national title in three consecutive years.

Competition judges said his winning menu - pork tenderloin, celeriac purée, crispy potatoes and apple followed by chocolate mousse with beetroot - was well-balanced, tasted great and was fun to eat. He demonstrated innovative use of beetroot in the dessert, great cooking of the pork and delivered on the nutrition front too.

Heaton Catering Equipment, a family run company since 1950, has supplied catering equipment, tableware and cutlery to all Hadrian Healthcare Group care homes for more than 10 years.
